Fig. 1 — Distribution of chitin synthases among eukaryotes, bacteria and viruses. Eukaryotic species phylogeny was adapted from [100], with modifications for Hacrobia [101], Ciliophora [102], Coelacanthimorpha [103], and Amoebozoa, Apusozoa, Filasterea and Choanoflagellida [104]. Groups in which the presence of chitin synthase protein was detected are shaded in grey and written in bold. In each group, we include, in brackets, the number of species harboring chitin synthase proteins compared to the number of species analyzed. These species are listed in Additional file 3: Table S3 and Additional file 14: Table S7
