Isotopomer analysis of proteinogenic alanine in Δhpt grown on 50 mM 13C-sodium bicarbonate with 100% argon (Ar) gas in the headspace (A) and 100% H2 gas in the headspace (B). No growth was observed, and the OD600 of the culture grown in either Ar or H2 gas dropped from 0.46 to 0.28 (in Ar gas) and from 0.43 to 0.29 (in H2 gas) 24 h postinoculation.
