Histogram of adhesion forces taken from experiments without fusion events for WT SNARE proteins (Top) and the ∆84 mutant (Bottom) in the absence of calcium ions. Adhesion forces are generally much lower than in the presence of calcium. Between one and three SNARE complexes are formed, each contributing an adhesive force of 70 pN in case of the WT SNARE and 60 pN for the ∆84 mutant.
