Plot of the baseline noise parameter σB (see Eq. (2)) versus the inverse of the square root of image intensity, restricted to low gradient pixels (those with relative gradient in the range [0,2.5]) for the step-and-shoot fields of Fig. 2. Quantum noise is proportional to the inverse of the square root of image intensity. To the extent that the plot exhibits a possible linear relationship, it suggests that σB is a surrogate for quantum noise.
