(a) Bacterial growth in L1-Si medium supplemented with various essential nutrients (C-glucose, N-nitrogen, P-phosphorus, S-sulfur) was monitored over eight days (see Materials and methods). Presented are the maximal growth values that were obtained after three days of incubation. The initial bacterial inoculum was 1×105 CFU/ ml. Growth in CNPS reached 5×108 and was normalized to 100%. (b) Bacteria consume externally added DMSP. (c) DMSP production by E. huxleyi in pure culture (black bars) and in co-culture (grey bars). Error bars represent the standard deviation between two biological replicates.
