MMP-degradable starPEG-HEP hydrogels as an extracellular milieu to study heterotypic cell-cell interactions during angiogenic events. A) Hydrogels prepared using MMP-cleavable peptide linkers via a Michael-type addition allow the in situ encapsulation of growth factors and cells as well as cell-responsive degradation. B) The MMP-degradable mechanism of the matrix creates a cell-responsive environment for EC capillary formation, enabling the exploration of vascular capillary stabilization by mural cells and tumor vascularization.
