Ethanol tolerance of adults. The proportion of females surviving after 24 h of ethanol exposure was measured for four species: D. santomea (fuchsia), D. sechellia (gray), D. yakuba (gold), and cosmopolitan D. melanogaster (black). For simplicity, only medians are shown; sample sizes for each strain at each concentration varied from 3-16 replicate vials of ten females each. Strains were tested at concentrations of 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16, 20, and 25% ethanol.
