Table 1. Rome III diagnostic criteria for functional constipation.

Two or more of the following functional constipation symptoms appear:
 - Straining
 - Lumpy/hard stools
 - Sensation of incomplete evacuation
 - Sensation of anorectal blockage/obstruction
 - Manual maneuvers to facilitate in defecations
 - < Three defecations per week
Loose stool are rarely present without the use of laxative
Insufficient criteria for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Criteria fulfilled for the last three months
Symptomatic onset at least six months prior to diagnosis
