Consecutive layers are separated by a horizontal dashed line. As evident, each element’s efficiency/robustness arises from components at the layer beneath it; metabolite production depends on the functioning of the reactions producing it, the latter depends on the function of the genes encoding their enzymes, and the genes’ sequence effects their robustness and efficacy in turn.
