Titration of HCl-acidified canine blood by base solutions. Measured pH during titration of an initial volume of 4 mL of HCl-CA-K9-3 acidified canine blood using an added volume Vb of a base solution, 150 mM NaHCO3 (squares), 100 mM Na2CO3 (circles), and 100 mM NaOH + 100 mM NaCl (triangles); Dashed line, pH = 7.4 reference level, showing that nearly 5 times the volume of 150 mM NaHCO3 would be needed compared to 100 mM Na2CO3 solution to raise the pH of the blood to the reference level. The titration has been performed at 23°C.
