A total of 26 animals were vaccinated with SIVΔnef: four were sacrificed during the first two weeks of infection, four were sacrificed at week 5, and four sacrificed at week 20 (Challenge Day 0). The remaining 14 animals were challenged intravaginally with SIVmac251 and serially sacrificed at the indicated time points during the first two weeks after challenge.
