Schematic representation of the mechanism of action in suicide gene therapy. First, cancer cells are transfected with a gene that encodes for an enzyme. The enzyme is able to convert the non-toxic prodrug into its cytotoxic form resulting in the death of the transfected cancer cells and the neighboring ones through a phenomenon known as bystander effect.
