Table I.

The rehabilitation protocol after hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement consists into 4 phases. The objective of the physiotherapy and the progression criteria of each phase are summarized into this Table.

OBJECTIVES PROGRESSION CRITERIA
PHASE 1
1 to 4 WEEKS
The main objective in the first phase of rehabilitation immediately after arthroscopic hip surgery, is the protect ion of scar tissue and restoration of independent mobility.
  1. Minimum Pain with the exercises of Phase 1.

  2. Increased ROM.

  3. Muscle Activation adequatein all exercises.

  4. Remove canes

PHASE 2
4 to 8 WEEKS
The overall objective of this phase is to perform activities of daily living independently and pain-free manner.
  1. Normal gait without pain

  2. Full range of motion

  3. No joint swelling, muscle pain or irritation

  4. Adequate neuromuscular control in functional activities

PHASE 3
8 to 12 WEEKS
Phase 3 typically begins between 6th to 8th postoperative week, depending on the patient, their goal is to help restore even more endurance and muscle strength, improve cardiovascula fitness, optimize neuromuscular control, balance and proprioception.
  1. The patient performs all exercises Phase 3 painlessly and properly.

  2. Cardiovascular capacity similar to preoperative. Step

  3. Test the Sport Hip only for medical reasons

PHASE 4
SPORTS RETURN
Phase 4 aims to return to competition. Phase 4 aims to return to competition precautions to consider at this stage include all activities must be able to perform pain-free. Usually there are no specific limitations, except that start with impact activities initiated after the 5th month
