Lignin deposition observed in wildtype plants (a) and transgenic lines COMT-hpRNA (b) and C4H-hpRNA (c). The arrows indicate difference in lignin deposition in transgenic and wild type jute plants (red: epidermis; orange: pith; yellow: vascular cambium). The area between the epidermis and vascular cambium (indicated by black arrows) is the bast region from where the jute fiber is obtained. This area as observed is significantly less lignified in transgenic plants than the wild type.
