C57BL/6 (n=6) mice were exposed to either a single dose of 21 mg/kg or 3 doses of 7 mg/kg non-doped or 7% Ti-doped fumed silica, one week apart. On day 21, BAL fluid was collected to determine (A) IL-1β, (B) LIX, and (C) TGF-β1 levels. (D) Total collagen content in murine lung was determined by the Sircol assay. (E) Masson’s Trichrome staining was used to determine the collagen deposition in the lungs of animals treated with fumed silica. *p<0.05 compared to control mice. #p<0.05 compared to pristine fumed silica treated mice.
