CCI, controlled cortical impact; EP, ethyl pyruvate; GLC, glucose; HCO3, bicarbonate; O2 Sat, oxygen saturation; pCO2, partial pressure of carbon dioxide in mm Hg; pO2, partial pressure of oxygen in mm Hg; SAL, saline; SP, sodium pyruvate.

The concentration of plasma glucose and lactate are expressed as mmol/L.

All values are expressed as mean ± SEM. Effects of Group (*p < 0.05 vs. Sham; ˆ p < 0.05 vs. CCI–SAL; ŧ p < 0.05 vs. CCI–SP; p < 0.05 vs. CCI–EP, ¤ p < 0.05 vs. CCI–GLC) on pH, HCO3, or lactate were evaluated using repeated measures one-way ANCOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc analysis and controlling for the effect of pre-infusion (Pre) pH, HCO3, or lactate levels.

Group effects on pO2, pCO2, O2 saturation, and glucose were evaluated using repeated measures one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc analysis.
