Time courses of ethanolamine deamination by homogenates of E. coli cells that were grown in the medium containing ethanolamine and CN-Cbl. Homogenates of E. coli JM109 grown in the medium containing 40 ng of CN-Cbl/ml were incubated at 37°C for the indicated time in the following mixtures: 30 mM potassium phosphate buffer (pH 8.0), 50 mM KCl, 10 mM ethanolamine, 15 μM AdoCbl, in the presence (solid circles) or absence (open circles) of ATP plus MgCl₂ (3 mM each), in a total volume of 0.5 ml. The amount of acetaldehyde formed was determined as described in the text.
