An upregulated expression of microRNA (miRNA)-155 in T-cells is indicative for lethal acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) in mice. miR-155 plays a central role in fine-tuning the immune response, and expression can be triggered by T cell receptor (TCR) signaling. miRNA-155 regulates FOXP3, which is important for the survival of T regulatory cells and influences the targets signal transducer and activator of transcription factor 5 (STAT5) and suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS1). Targeting of 3,4,5-triphosphate 5-phosphatase 1 (SHIP1) by miRNA-155 results in an increased T-cell survival by an upregulated production of IFN-γ (93, 104108).
