The apical layer (indicated as “a”) contains most mitochondria and some nuclei (arrows), whereas the basal layer (indicated as “b”) contains some nuclei (arrowheads). The distinction between these two layers is solely for convenience, but these two layers are indistinguishable in the other regions. Mitochondria form a cluster of inverted cone in a cell. (C) Adjacent region. (D,E) Basal region. Cells are tilted toward the distal direction. (F) Mitochondrial depth (the deepest mitochondrial location) from the apical surface.
