Equation 1 describes the equilibrium transition of a substrate between the native (N) and unfolded (U) states, including a continuum of non-native intermediates (I). Equation 2 states the equilibrium between the inactive oligomeric form of the sHSP and the activated, binding-competent species. Formation of a sHSP/substrate complex (“C” in Equation 3) depends on the population of activated sHSP and the recognized non-native states of the substrate.
