Transcription of the phoP gene is subjected to negative regulation by RcsB via the sigma factor RpoS. Expression of a phoP::lacZ transcriptional fusion was monitored in wild-type and igaA1 isogenic strains lacking RcsB, RcsA, or RpoS regulators. All the strains carried the pIZ988 (phoPQ+) plasmid.
