The two phases of the Dimension-Change Card-Sort Task (DCCS). Children are provided with Sorting cards that vary on two dimensions, color and shape. In each phase, children are asked to place the Sorting cards into two boxes marked by Target cards, each of which matches the Sorting cards on exactly one dimension. In Phase 1, children are asked to sort by one dimension (e.g., shape). In Phase 2, children are asked to switch to sorting the same cards by a different dimension (e.g., color). Children’s ability to sort correctly in Phase 2 (the post-switch phase) is taken as a measure of children’s ability to switch between relevant dimensions.
