Na⁺‐ and CO₂/HCO₃ ^‐‐independent acid extrusion does not involve V‐ATPase activity in isolated CPECs. Isolated clusters of CPECs were loaded with BCECF and pH_i was monitored during NH₄Cl prepulse acid‐loading and pH_i recovery.
