Stimulus configuration for Experiments 1 and 2. A virtual sound source approached or receded along a path parallel to the listener’s interaural axis at three different speeds. The listener was situated 2 m from the straight-line path of the source facing perpendicular to the path. In the “Close” condition, the sound source traveled between 2 m and 47 m from the median plane of the listener. In the “Distant” condition, the source traveled between 15 m and 60 m from the median plane of the listener
