Temporal properties of wide-field motion responses. Six response types were found (A–F). These include (A) units with spiking entrained to the temporal frequency of the grating, phasic excitatory responses at the beginning (B) and end (C) of movement, (D) tonic excitatory response lasting the duration of movement, and inhibitory phasic (E) and tonic (F) responses. Examples of all response types were found for both directions of movement, despite only responses to right movement being shown. Gray block indicates duration of stimulus and dashed line indicates baseline firing rate (Kathman et al., 2014).
