Partners involved in HIV-1 genomic RNA packaging. (A) Schematic representation of the first 615 nucleotides at the 5′-end of HIV-1 gRNA and the main secondary structure elements. The blue square contains the Psi region (SL1-SL4). SL1 is also known as the Dimerization Initiation Site (DIS) as it mediates the initial steps of gRNA dimerization through a kissing-loop interaction. The major splice donor (SD) site in SL2 and the AUG translation initiation codon of the gag gene are indicated.
