For the generation of these simulation results, we took $r_b=1$, ${\mathit{\theta }}_b=0\text{rad}$ and ${\mathit{\beta }}_{\mathit{\rho }}=0({\text{cm}}^2\text{day})/\text{cells}$. The values for the remaining parameters are equal to those depicted in Table 1. ${\mathit{\lambda }}_1$, ${\mathit{\lambda }}_2$, and ${\mathit{\lambda }}_3$ are the eigenvalues of the tensor ${\mathrm{\Omega }}^{\mathit{\rho }}$ and ${\mathit{\theta }}_{{\mathbf{q}}_3}$ is the angle between the eigenvector related to the largest eigenvalue ${\mathit{\lambda }}_3$ (where the third element of this eigenvector is larger than/equal to zero) and the positive horizontal axis. Within the subfigures on the bottom row, the transparency (i.e., $\mathit{\alpha }(\mathbf{x},t)$) is set to either zero (opaque) or one (fully transparent) based on the following rule: if $({\mathit{\lambda }}_3(\mathbf{x},t)-{\mathit{\lambda }}_2(\mathbf{x},t))/{\mathit{\lambda }}_2(\mathbf{x},t)>0.2$, then $\mathit{\alpha }(\mathbf{x},t)=0$, else $\mathit{\alpha }(\mathbf{x},t)=1$
