The rim101Δ strain elicits an inflammatory and Th1 cytokine response in infected lungs. The WT, rim101Δ mutant, and rim101Δ + RIM101 reconstituted strains were inoculated (104 fungal cells) into BALB/c mice by inhalation. At day 7 and day 14 postinfection, the indicated cytokines were quantified from whole-lung digestions. 4 mice were inoculated for each strain. Data represent results of 2 independent experiments (8 mice in total). Primary data for cytokine levels are listed in Table S3. One-way ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison tests were used to compare means of results to the WT infection data for each day. G-CSF, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. ***, P < 0.001; **, P < 0.01; *, P < 0.05. Error bars represent standard errors of the means.
