(a) The mass attenuation coefficient of bone as a function of incident photon energy where the x-ray transmission is and ρ is the density and l the thickness of the bone. (b) The mass attenuation coefficient may be converted into a spectral transmission function, applied here to a spectrum of Ecrit = 33 keV. The ratio between total integrated incident and transmitted energy gives an overall transmission factor. (c) The 3D reconstruction may be virtually illuminated with a synchrotron-like spectrum given the calculated total transmission factors and camera response function. Good image contrast is observed for approximately 15 keV <
< 50 keV, but beyond this region the sample is either too opaque or too transparent.
