In 2013 Hans Paerl and Chinese colleagues conducted bioassays at Lake Taihu to assess the impact of nutrient enrichment on cyanobacterial blooms. The containers were filled with lake water treated with various concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus to show how the nutrients affected the lake’s natural algal community.
