Infection of DC with viable C. trachomatis but not culture with heat-inactivated C. trachomatis induces the production of IL-18. Monocyte-derived DC (2 × 105) were either infected as indicated with C. trachomatis serovar L2 (L2) and serovar E (E), pulsed with heat-inactivated L2 (HK L2) and heat-inactivated E (HK E) at an MOI of 10:1, or left untreated (Medium). IL-1β and IL-18 levels were determined by ELISA in supernatants taken 24 h posttreatment. Means ± SD were calculated for two different donors.
