Figure 1. — Experimental apparatus and design of the closed economy. Photograph of a closed economy box. Measurements of lever presses, food dispensed, water bottle licks, footshocks delivered and received, and locomotor tracking and spatial position via overhead-mounted tracking camera were coordinated by ANY-maze I/O interface and software (RRID:SCR_014289). Gonadally intact male (n = 8) and female (n = 12) and OVX female rats (n = 8) rats were housed in the closed economy boxes upon arrival and were shaped to respond on an FR25-CRF schedule over ∼12 d, followed by 14 d of baseline measurement, 14 d of shock, and 14 d of extinction (no shock) conditions.
