Schematic of arginine metabolism. For the sake of simplicity, the major arginine-catabolizing enzymes involved in inflammatory immune responses, NOS2 and arginase 1, are depicted. The expression of these enzymes is tightly regulated by microenvironmental inflammatory signals. This diagram, however, does not suggest that these enzymes are concurrently induced in a given cell type.
