Nonlinear relationship between functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activation (ordinate) and memory strength (abscissa) in the hippocampus (HPC). The pattern is equal during encoding as well as during retrieval. The memory strength in this example ranges from 1 (weak) to 6 (strong). The figure shows that weak to middle strong (1–5) memories show a constant fMRI activation, where very strong (6) memories are associated with an extremely high fMRI activation in the HPC (according to [11]).
