Spatial distribution of dendritic spines. (a) Thin and (b) mushroom spine densities increase significantly at regions closest to the soma after SCI as compared with Sham (*p < 0.05). ((b), (c)) Treatment with NSC23766 partially reduced these changes in thin and mushroom spines close-to-Sham levels. Moreover, NSC23766 treatment in SCI animals increased thin-shaped spines and decreased mushroom-shaped spines as compared with SCI animals and vehicle treatment only (#p < 0.05). As shown in (a), total spine densities do not change significantly at any dendritic region after SCI. Data are shown as mean ± SEM.
