Blood flow, expression of eNOS, and atherosclerotic lesions in the aortic arch. (A) The lesser curvature of the aortic arch is exposed to turbulent flow and is more prone to atherosclerosis. The greater curvature, on the other hand, is exposed to laminar flow and is less prone to atherosclerosis. (B) The aorta is opened with a view of the endothelium. eNOS expression (dots) is noticeably decreased in the lesser curvature.
