Respiration rates of detached leaves of Zea mays, Echinochloa crus-galli, and Digitaria sanguinalis. R ₀, respiration rate before photosynthesis was determined in leaves adapted to darkness for 10 h. Then, the leaves were exposed to light (400 μmol photons m⁻² s⁻¹) and photosynthesis (Pn) was measured. The respiration following photosynthesis (R ₁) was determined after 2–3 min of darkness, which represents the light-enhanced dark respiration (LEDR) of plants from growth condition (ML); R ₂, respiration measured 2 h after photoinhibitory light treatment (1600 μmol photons m⁻² s⁻¹).
