Respiration rates of detached leaves of Zea mays, Echinochloa crus-galli, and Digitaria sanguinalis. R 0, respiration rate before photosynthesis was determined in leaves adapted to darkness for 10 h. Then, the leaves were exposed to light (400 μmol photons m−2 s−1) and photosynthesis (Pn) was measured. The respiration following photosynthesis (R 1) was determined after 2–3 min of darkness, which represents the light-enhanced dark respiration (LEDR) of plants from growth condition (ML); R 2, respiration measured 2 h after photoinhibitory light treatment (1600 μmol photons m−2 s−1).
