(A) In L. monocytogenes, the srtB operon contains genes for cell wall-associated and secreted proteins (lmo2186 and lmo2185), sortase B that ligates them to the peptidoglycan (lmo2181), and an ABC transporter (lmo2182 to lmo2184). Genes encoding an ATP-binding component of the putative ABC transporter were absent from this region in Brochothrix species. In B. thermosphacta, the length of the second gene of this locus varied considerably among the isolates, while in B. campestris, the evolution of this gene led to three separate coding regions.
