During the analysis, artifacts were removed using independent component analysis (ICA). To identify artifactual independent components (ICs), ICs were spatially correlated to prior white matter (WM) and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) maps. The figure indicates spatial correlation values (Pearson r2) between ICs and CSF (vertical axes), and between ICs and WM (horizontal axes). Higher correlation values indicate higher spatial overlap between an IC and WM or CSF. Components within the green boxes were retained for cleaned fMRI signal reconstruction.
