In the presence of ST6GAL1, adipogenesis is inhibited by α2,6-sialylation of integrin-β1 and by activation of downstream signaling, including FAK phosphorylation. During adipogenesis, St6gal1 expression is epigenetically silenced by DNA methylation, which leads to hyposialylation of integrin-β1, impairment of downstream signaling, and up-regulation of key adipogenic genes.
