Shown are the kinetics of acetate, formate, and ethanol production by the wild-type strain (upper graph) and the mutant strain (lower graph) incubated in AIB medium. Metabolites in the extracellular medium were identified by HPLC at the indicated times. HP indicates that 10 mm sodium hypophosphite was added to the incubation medium to inhibit PFL. Each value is the mean of at least four independent experiments carried out with cell suspensions at 107 cells ml−1. The error bars indicate standard deviations. Note the different scales for the two strains.
