Closer observation of the change in airway pressure during the expiratory phase reveals that there is first a sharp drop from the end-inspiratory plateau pressure (Pplat) to an inflection point, which is eventually followed by a gradual decline to the positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) level, or zero.
