Left panel (A). Twenty thermal stimuli activating successively C- and Aδ-fibers and twenty electrical stimuli activating Aβ fibers were applied on the right hand dorsum before, during and after applying a heterotopic noxious conditioning stimulus (HNCS) to the left foot (immersion in a 5°C circulating water bath). The order of administration of the test stimuli was counterbalanced across participants. Right panel (B) details of how activation of C- and Aδ-fibers was obtained with the laser stimulator. The ordinate represents skin surface temperature, the abscissa represents time in seconds.
