Schematic representation of the relationship between the different EVB diabatic states (∊1 and ∊2) in a simple two-state reaction, the corresponding adiabatic reorganization energy (λ) and the resulting activation barriers (ΔG ) in water (left) and in an enzyme (right). Both λ and ΔG are significantly smaller in the enzyme, i.e. the enzyme would be a catalyst for this hypothetical reaction (Warshel et al., 2006).
