(A) When the tooth (lateral incisor or first molar) remains in the maxilla or mandible, its VOI is located below the maxillary sinus (not shown) or above the mandibular canal (*) and apical to its root apex (solid line). (B) When no tooth remains in the jaw, the VOI is drawn under the coronal cortical bone (solid line). The VOI (blue cylinder) is then bounded within the trabecular bone.
