Accumulation of saturated fatty acids blocks the proliferative response to PDGF. Human fibroblasts were serum‐starved for 24 h before treatment with 0.2 mm palmitate, stearate, palmitoleate or oleate alone, or both palmitate and oleate in the presence or absence of FBS (10%) or PDGF‐BB (25 ng/mL) for 24 h. Solutions were prepared from sodium salts in A and neutralized fatty acids in B. Statistics were performed using Student t‐test to compare fatty acid‐treated conditions to the corresponding controls. [³H]‐thymidine incorporation was measured. The result corresponds to the mean of three independent experiments with SEM. *P < 0.05; **P < 0.01.
