Schematic representation of the distribution of E4 proteins in HPV1 infections and their relationship to productive viral events. The full-length E1E4 protein (17-kDa [17K]) is proteolytically cleaved to produce smaller polypeptides of 16, 11, and 10 kDa (10). The timing of the appearance of the processed polypeptides in relation to the stage of keratinocyte differentiation and virus events is only an approximation (references 1, 4, 12, 28, and our unpublished data).
