Summarizing figure. The small-volume effect enables the spine to have robust, sensitive, and efficient information transfer. Robustness appears when intrinsic noise is larger than extrinsic noise. Sensitivity appears because of the stochasticity in Ca2+ increase. Note that, as index for the sensitivity in this figure, the inverse of Amp (Fig. 5B) is used.
