A. The respiratory chain consists of five complexes. Of these, three (complexes I, III and IV) participate in the generation of the proton gradient across the inner membrane. The mtAKR mouse strain served as reference, because the analyzed strains B6Ntac (grey), mt129S1 (red) and mtNOD (blue) differ in a single polymorphism affecting one subunit of complex I, III and IV, respectively. *The mtNOD strain harbors an additional polymorphism in tRNA-Arg. B. The figure summarizes the main features of each strain in comparison to the reference mtAKR.
