Two-dimensional gel-electrophoresis of proteins extracted from different Fusobacterium spp. The bacteria were grown in Todd Hewitt broth without cysteine prior to protein extraction and separation. One gel was stained with Coomassie blue (a) for protein detection and extraction and another with in-gel activity bismuth staining (c) for detection of proteins producing H2S. Bismuth reacts with sulfide and produces a precipitate, bismuth sulfide, shown as brown spots in the gel. After bismuth staining the same gel was stained with Coomassie blue (b).
